Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need help?

  • Emotional distress.  Are you feeling sad? Anxious?  Irritable?  Worried?  Overwhelmed?  Do these feelings linger, even after the event that triggered them has long since passed?  Are these emotions interfering with your appetite, sleep, work, family or social life?
  • Relationship difficulties.  Do you have trouble maintaining satisfying relationships?  Have you been avoiding others or lashing out at them?  Are you worried about a particular relationship or about your ability to connect with others in general?
  • Personal growth.  Do you wish that you could get more out of life?  Find greater meaning in daily activities?  Have more self-confidence?  Enjoy your family and friends more?  Be willing to try new experiences?  Set goals and successfully achieve them?

Squirrel Hill Psychological Services has therapists who are experienced at helping individuals, couples and families successfully manage such issues and develop greater life satisfaction.

I was told that I should get psychological testing for my child.  What does that involve?

Psychological testing involves the administration of standardized tests in order to assess various aspects of a person's functioning.  Information gained can relate to intellectual strengths and weaknesses, emotional difficulties and personality traits.  Testing is frequently used to assess for giftedness, learning disabilities and attention deficit difficulties, and to provide treatment suggestions.  Testing is conducted by a psychologist, who selects the particular tests to administer based on the presenting referral question.  The duration of testing varies from person to person but sometimes involves several hours of testing over more than one session.  Because testing is such an individualized experience, call us for a discussion about what testing might involve for your child.

How do I know that Squirrel Hill Psychological Service is the right place for me?

Choosing a psychotherapist is a very personal experience, and the right therapist for you might not be the right therapist for someone else.  Does your therapist seem to understand your concerns?  Seem caring?  Competent?  Helpful?  All of the therapists at Squirrel Hill Psychological Services are licensed professionals who have expertise in helping families and individuals of all ages deal with a wide range of issues.

Our staff's services are overseen by a licensed, clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist.  We are an outpatient psychiatric clinic licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and are nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation.  We not only adhere to the highest standards for quality, but are committed to doing so with caring, compassion and respect for our clients' dignity.

    What hours are you open?

Squirrel Hill Psychological Services is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with evening hours on Monday and Wednesday. During the months of October through March, the office closes one hour earlier on Fridays, at 4:00 p.m.  Psychological testing may be scheduled outside of these hours if necessary.

What if I have a crisis outside of normal office hours?

In the event of an acute emergency, call 911 or go to a hospital emergency room.  For less urgent concerns, an answering service takes all after-hours calls. If necessary, the service can contact our on-call therapist to determine what action should be taken.

    What about payment?
Counseling services are covered by many major insurers, HMO's, Medicare and Medical Assistance. Sliding scale fees are offered for those without insurance.
